I was reading a blog today about the affect Facebook and other forms of Social media have affected family dynamics. Where members of a family, under the same roof, are each engaged in some sort of social connection to others outside of the house.
I have had conversations with people who are anti-social media before and have at times struggled to put my thoughts about why I feel Social Media is a positive tool into a convincing argument. But in this article I read something that made me say “Exactly” out loud.
“What if technology isn’t good or evil, but simply reveals and amplifies what’s already there?”
I agree with this statement 100%. If a family or any other group does not communicate or interact well, then social media is going to magnify that. The exact opposite can be said as well. If a family or group communicates and interacts well then social media can enhance that relationship.
A family sitting down for a meal does not have to all be interacting with others that are not at that table. As a parent, I have a large role in helping my kids develop positive, caring relationships with-in our family and role modeling positive social media use myself. If they have a fun, love filled relationship right in front of them, they will not seek one out off in cyberspace.
