Why Teens Love Taylor Swift

I found myself watching the 2013 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night. While I was watching, I noticed a recurring thought; how much I liked Taylor Swift. Now let me clarify what I mean by that statement. I was purposely viewing the award show through the lens of a teen’s eye. Trying to gain a better perspective of what is popular with teens today and why.

Now back to why I like Taylor Swift. I am always impressed with her.  How she dresses, performs and her overall attitude.  She is a very positive role model in today’s age.

More often than not my wife and I were disgusted by some of what we saw. Such as Nicki Minaj twerking on Lil Wayne.

taylor-swift-22-bbaThe night was filled with artists being self-absorbed, swearing and dancing provocatively.   Yet Taylor had a clean performance and I saw her winning award after award. (She won a total of eight awards)

It got me thinking about why is Taylor Swift so popular with teens today in a culture that is filled with a lot of other________ (insert your own adjective here). Here are my thoughts.

Teens just want to have FUN. I heard a presentation by tru where they shared that 74% of teens just want to have fun. Taylor Swift emulates this concept. She seems to always be having fun. Let me give you an example: While Jennifer Lopez was performing at the award show you saw artists in the crowd bobbing their heads with sunglasses on trying to look cool. Not Taylor, she was all out having a little dance party with her friends in the middle of the audience.

And if you saw her performance and compared it to other performers, Taylor’s was just pure fun. Not trying to be cool or make a statement. Check it out and you will see what I mean by Taylor just having fun. Did I say the word “fun”enough yet?

She is Authentic. In the McCann Worldgroups the Truth About Youth report, they identify that teens are motivated by authenticity. I personally have heard teens speak about how true this is for them. They crave authenticity. In a world where they know people are putting on fronts and creating fake accounts online, they want something real. Taylor Swift comes across as being very authentic. In all of her acceptance speeches I have seen, she always seems to still be shocked that she won and does not act like she deserved the award or was any better than anyone else up for the award.

I asked a teen about why he felt Taylor Swift was popular and he said it is because she has the ability to keep the audience’s attention with her voice. Not anything else such as dressing or dancing provocatively.

I know no one is perfect and I am sure Taylor Swift is not perfect either. But from what I see when I watch these various award shows, hear celebrities speak or read about their actions, I wish we had more Taylor Swift’s out there for teens to look up to and model their behavior after.

A Teen Perspective on the MTV Video Music Awards Show

Each year I make an effort to watch the MTV Video Music Awards. I find that the awards show offers a glimpse into current teen culture.  What music is popular with teens, what actors and artists are popular, fashion trends and much more. When I watch the show and try to decipher what I am viewing and put it into context with where teen culture is at I am coming from an adult perspective.  One thing I have learned over my years working with teens is if you really want to understand whats going on with teens and more about their culture you need to ask teens themselves.  With that in mind, I decided to ask a teen who was watching the MTV Video Music Awards to write a guest post for me sharing his review and opinion as a teen.  Check out what 18-year-old DeQuan from New Jersey had to say about this years VMA’s.

So it was that time of year again. That time where the biggest names in music that appeal to most people under the age of 25 get together. That’s right I’m talking about the MTV Video Music Awards. This year marked the 29th anniversary of the ongoing award show. This year’s host was Kevin Heart, no doubt because of the well received reactions to the opening he did at last year’s show. Kevin was a laugh riot throughout the night making jokes about what is going on in the pop culture world.

There was no huge disagreement amongst fans as to who won what this year.  Chris Brown taking home best Male Video while Nicki Minaj took home best female video. Best Electronic Video went to Calvin Harris while Drake and Lil Wayne took the award for the Hip-Hop category. If there was one complaint about this year’s show perhaps it would have been the fact that MTV doesn’t separate groups and solo artists.

One Direction took home the best new artist award and there was no doubt that they would. Since they debuted their hit single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” it’s been topping the charts everywhere. They even preformed it at the closing ceremony for the 2012 Olympics in London over the summer. They were up against Frank Ocean whose performance was a surprise to everyone and became one of the most talked about performances on twitter with over 30,000 tweets. In my opinion, separating groups and solo artists, would allow some artist’s to stand a better chance at winning. Not that I don’t like One Direction, I enjoy them very much and I have their entire album, however others in that category were Fun and I wanted both groups to win. Perhaps if there was a category for best new groups it would give exposure to more groups and solo artists alike.

Other performances that took the night were those of Pink who played tribute to herself both with her opening song “Get this party started” and by swinging through the air as she did during her highly acclaimed 2009 performance. Also, one can’t forget Alicia Keys whose performances are always memorable and star-studded. She was nothing short of magnificent. Perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night and the one I definitely looked forward to was the performance of the absolutely flawless Taylor Swift. Her new number one smash hit, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” which became the most digitally downloaded songs only two weeks after its release.  Taylor’s performance was very upbeat and had the entire crowd ecstatic and hyped. It’s definitely one for the VMAs history books.

Overall I think we can all say this year’s awards went off without a hitch. There was even attention drawn to Chris Brown hugging Rihanna, really expressing that the vibe of the night was peaceful and just about celebrating music. Special nod to Kevin for really keeping the show flowing as well

On another note, this show does showcase a part of Teen Culture in terms of music as well as other mediums.  This was seen by some of the guests in the audience (Twilight Cast, Dwight Howard, Jersey Shore Cast). I would say that the MTV VMA’s is an accurate way to judge teen culture. Many of the presenters are popular among teen audiences, although many of them were there to remind us that they still exist and that they have an upcoming project.

As far as they way many of them act I feel that it’s just apart of the brand they’ve established for themselves (Nicki Minaj for example). The unfortunate truth is that we are a generation that likes to go uncensored and unfiltered. We like talking about topics and subjects that in the past would be considered very touchy. The problem is we don’t know where to draw that line. Rihanna speaking about wanting someone to be her “sex slave” was a bit much. However, most teens don’t realize the true messages behind the performances, for most of us it’s about the visual and the beat.

To an extent, as a teen it does bother me. I’m not angry with Rihanna, I love her as an artist. But the truth is in this society with the level of success and fame that many of the artists featured on the show have achieved the responsibility of being a role model. As an author of a series of books for young adults, I try very hard to ensure that the right messages are being sent out. The truth is songs like Rihanna’s are acceptable and are considered the norm among most teens. I think there needs to be a limit yes, moments like Kanye’s were frowned upon. And though it was wrong, yes I think promoting songs about sex and drugs aren’t that great either.

What it comes down to unfortunately  is that the MTV VMA’s promote artists that are popular, they have no control of what record industries allow to be put on the radio. But MTV does know that if they want ratings then they must feature those artists who are currently popular. I don’t think any artist is perfect but they should strive harder to send positive messages. An adult watching might get many mixed messages, but the truth is being a teen these days, that’s how our lives are. We get many mixed messages from the media

There you have it. The MTV VMA’s from a teens perspective. I want to thank DeQuan for his guest post. DeQuan will begin studying film making and screenwriting in January at the New York Film Academy. He is the creator and author of the Danger Kids Series with the first novel to be released December 12th. He is an avid blogger and blogs about thing that currently affect his generation from politics to media.

134 Million Teen Votes Gets My Attention

I spent last Sunday evening doing what many 30 year olds do. Watching the Teen Choice Awards of course. I set the DVR (to fast forward through the commercials), grabbed my laptop (to Google any teen heart-throb whom I did not recognize) and snagged some cookies and milk to enjoy with the show.

Why did I choose to spend my Sunday evening watching a show designed for a much younger audience?  Because 134 Million teens voted for their favorite Movies, Music, Actors and much more. They literally were saying, “Hey check out what we like.” And for someone who works with teens, follows teen trends and pays attention to teen culture, this is a great snapshot into what teens like all packed into a nice 2 hour show with some laughs and entertainment mixed in.

What did I learn you ask?

  • The Twilight Series and its cast are still very hot collecting several awards brining their total to 41 Surfboards (No silly little men trophies here) since 2008.
  • Teens still love Taylor Swift who picked up her 20th award, the most ever by a female. I have to think teens enjoy Taylor Swift as much as they do because she comes across very down to earth and relatable. Every time the cameras showed her in her seat she was laughing or jamming to the music. Other celebrities seemed to always know when the camera was pointed in their direction and would try to look cool.  Taylor seemed as though she was oblivious to the cameras and just being herself. Teens crave authenticity and that is what she gives them.
  • In the past few months I have seen several tweets and heard teens mention that teens getting tattoos is on the rise. The fact that the hosts Demi Lovato (Singer and X Factor Judge) and Kevin McHale (Glee) spent several minutes talking about and sharing their various tattoos signified that this may in-deed be a rising teen trend.
  • Teens just want to have fun! This was seen by teens in the audience singing and dancing to the music performances and intro music. There were videos of teens singing along to “Call Me Maybe” by Carley Rae Jepsen were shown during her closing performance. And by their votes for songs with poppy feel good beats that  everyone can sing along too.
  • Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street) is as popular with the teens as he is with older generations. This was proven by his award in the Choice Movie Actor: Comedy Category and by the fact that my wife wants to see almost any movie he is in.

For a full recap of the evenings winners head over to the Teen Choice Awards website.

Here is your youthworker and parent tip of the day, if you don’t know who one of the winners is or what the show/movie is, Google it.

Surf’s Up: The Teen Choice Awards

When I speak to groups about teen trends I try to give tools that enable them to keep up with teen culture and trends on their own. One of those tools is to watch shows like the Teen Choice Awards by Fox, which allows 13-19 year olds to vote on the years biggest achievements in sports, music, movies, television, fashion and more.

I like to think of myself as being in the know on what is hot and what is not with teens. But to be honest I keep my pen and paper handy while watching in order to jot down the names of musicians or television shows that are mentioned that I have never heard of previously.  I often then try to DVR an episode or two, listen to some of their music on iTunes just to get an idea of what it or they are about.

Here are a couple quick thoughts from watching the show last night:

1) I need to do a better job keeping up with what is popular and make a better effort to know what different shows are about. More than once I said “Who is that” or “What channel is that show on.”

2) There were a lot of screaming girls in the audience. Did they let teen males in the theater? If so you could not hear them.Which led me to wonder how many teen girls vs teen guys actually voted for the nominees.

3) Over 100 MILLION votes were cast. I don’t care what competition or awards show it is, that is a lot of votes.  I know half of those were probably Bieber fans but still, any group that gets out to vote with that results is saying something loud and clear.

4) I watched a lot of nominees and presenters who were in their teens or close to act really uncomfortable or try too hard to “Look Cool” on the show. I wont say names but often this led me to think, “what does this say about who you are as a person?”  With that in mind I nominate Taylor Swift for the ultimate Teen Role Model, not only did she walk away with some Big awards, she showed elegance, class and was not afraid to be a quirky teen girl. I have a lot of respect for her and am glad she is a role model for so many teen girls.

If you missed the show or want a quick “Who should I be aware of”, the following all took away numerous awards: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, The Harry Potter series and cast, Taylor Swift and anything Vampire (Twilight series and Vampire Diaries).

Your next glimpse into Teen Culture will come on August 28th during the MTV Video Music Awards. Set your DVR and buckle in.
